Tuscan Oil Jars & Amphora Urns

Add this to Oil Jar page These classic vessels have been used for storing olive oil and wine, for thousands of years due to the porous nature of terracotta they allowed the contents to ‘breathe’ and keep fresh, even today the terracotta Orci are still used for winemaking, in fact there is now a resurgence of winemakers going back to the old tradition of storing wine in terracotta urns, and that is something we can help you with if your require a traditional wine jar, do please contact us.

In the garden the oil jar serves as striking focal point that blends centuries-old tradition with contemporary garden design. Whether flanking a doorway, anchoring a border, or standing alone as garden art, these pieces embody authentic Italian craftsmanship.

The Vaso Toscano range of amphora start from 60cm accent pieces that can be easily moved around the garden, to the monumental 120cm sized oil jars that can be placed by us to your chosen location. All the terracotta oil jars are frost-proof and designed for year-round outdoor display.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Every pot is handmade in the historic pottery towns of Impruneta and Siena in Tuscany, where artisan terracotta has been produced for over 500 years. We work exclusively with two small family-run potteries using traditional techniques passed through generations.

  • Yes. Our pots are made from Galestro clay and fired at 1,000°C for two days with 12 hours at peak temperature. This creates terracotta that withstands British winters without cracking when placed on the included risers for drainage. We guarantee frost resistance.

  • Absolutely. Vaso Toscano pots are designed for permanent outdoor use in all UK weather conditions. Simply ensure water drains freely through the base using the included risers — never let pots sit in standing water during freezing weather.

  • Yes — this is what sets us apart. For UK orders over £300, we offer free personal delivery and garden placement. Our team (often the owners themselves) will position your pot exactly where you want it and provide expert advice on planting and positioning. We handle our own deliveries for complete care and control.

  • Most pots come with three terracotta risers and a planting membrane as standard. These ensure proper drainage and prevent waterlogging — essential for frost protection and plant health. All pots are individually inspected before dispatch.

  • Terracotta requires minimal maintenance. Avoid pressure washers and harsh cleaners — a soft brush removes moss and dirt. Ensure pots drain freely and never sit in standing water. Over time, they'll develop a natural aged patina, which is desirable and authentic.

  • Yes. We regularly create custom commissions for garden designers and private clients. Whether you need specific dimensions, particular finishes, or bulk orders for landscaping projects, contact us to discuss possibilities.

  • Galestro clay from Impruneta and Siena contains unique mineral content from ancient limestone deposits. Combined with traditional two-day firing at 1,000°C, it creates terracotta that is genuinely frost-proof, highly porous for root health, and built to last centuries. Mass-produced pots cannot match this quality.

  • Yes. We work with landscape designers, architects, and horticulture professionals across the UK. Contact us directly for trade accounts, project pricing, and designer partnership options.

  • We regularly exhibit at RHS shows and garden events across the UK. Join our mailing list or follow @vasotoscano on Instagram for upcoming show dates and viewing opportunities.

  • With proper drainage and care, our pots last decades or even centuries. We regularly hear from customers whose pots are 50+ years old and still perfect. Quality Tuscan terracotta is a lifetime investment, not a seasonal purchase.

  • Every pot is individually packed and crated. If damage occurs during shipping (extremely rare), we replace it immediately at no cost. Our personal delivery service for UK orders virtually eliminates this risk.
